Blazing the trail...
In September, 2006, Tacoma-Pierce County was the first city in the world to invite noted economic development expert Richard Florida, Ph.D. and his leadership team to help prepare the greater Tacoma area for enhanced economic prosperity in the years ahead. Hosted by the Tacoma-Pierce County Chamberof Commerce Foundation,Dr Florida shared his insights with 30 diverse participants in a two day Creative Cities Leadership Seminar.
According to Dr. Florida’s research, businesses today are choosing where to locate -- not based on incentive packages – but because the area offers the talent they need to compete successfully in a global environment.
To grow and prosper, regions must have high concentrations of “creative workers” in the fields of technology, research and design, arts and culture, professional and managerial occupations, and education and training.
These workers, who currently number 40 million in the U.S. and account for 30 percent of the workforce, want to live and work in stimulating environments rich in natural, cultural and entertainment resources. In 2006, Tacoma-Pierce County was home to 62,500 of these “creative workers” who earned nearly 40% of the area’s wages.
Members of Tacoma-Pierce County’s Creative Cities Leadership Project (CCLP) have been working with others in our community to ensure that we continue to have the talent, technology, tolerance and territorial assets needed to attract these highly prized and valued workers, who can fuel economic prosperity for our region in the future.
